February 6th, 2008

Elfriede JelinekThis story will tell you abot famus writer Elfriede Jelinek, who was born in Mürzzuschlag, EC Austria. A feminist novelist, her books focus on the subordinate role of women in society and their economic and social dependence on men. In her earlier work, such as Michael. We have found that measurements of environmentally relevant parameters generate some of the greatest student enthusiasm in our freshmen chemistry laboratories. In this regard we have developed a lab exercise to investigate and compare the carbon monoxide content of automobile exhaust and cigarette smoke using equipment available in most undergraduate labs. This experiment uses gas chromatography with thermal conductivity detection to analyze for the % by volume concentrations typically found in cigarette smoke and auto exhaust. Students are usually surprised to discover that cigarette smoke has a much higher CO concentration than does the exhaust from a clean, well maintained vehicle.

U.S. cigarette manufacturers have the market power to pass through very substantial cost increases to consumers in the form of higher prices. The U.S. cigarette industry is a 4-firm oligopoly. No significant new competitors have entered the domestic market for over 40 years, and barriers to new entry remain high. There are no close substitutes for cigarettes as a product. Other tobacco products and current nicotine replacement therapies are only partial substitutes. The demand for cigarettes is inelastic. As a result, an increase in price will raise more revenue even though it causes consumption to fall. 1 Historically, U.S. cigarette manufacturers have consistently passed on the costs of higher Federal excise taxes to their customers. 2
